Chapter 9

After praying with Daisy and hearing her words of encouragement, Camellia is empowered by the thought that who she is inside is what really matters. Sure, she has temptations. Dealing with her parents makes it hard to continue with her plans to quit modeling. Feeling glad her ex has been arrested is probably not very forgiving of her, but she feels safer knowing he can’t come after her again.

Camellia parks her car and walks into the community center. She sees Rose standing next to the blonde man. She glares at Camellia and the man speaks into her ear. Rose turns away and walks out of the building. The blonde man smirks at Camellia as he follows her out the door.

Camellia takes her seat in the room and notices Daisy praying. Her head is bowed and her lips are moving, but Camellia can’t hear anything.

Daisy raises her eyes and sees Camellia. She smiles but it doesn’t disguise the tears streaming down her face. Camellia immediately reaches her hand across the table to place it over Daisy’s hand. “What’s wrong, Daisy?”

“It’s Rose. She won’t be attending tonight. I’m not sure what’s wrong with her. Well, I do know actually. It’s that man she met. I think he’s lying to her.” Daisy looks down. “She claims you made a pass at her boyfriend. After praying with you yesterday I know you didn’t. So I’m assuming he lied.” Daisy glances at Camellia. “She refuses to be in the group with you. She said I had to choose between you and her.”

Camellia feels cold. Her face clears of all emotion but she keeps her chin up. Daisy continues. “Of course I told her I won’t make you leave the group. That isn’t how we do things here. Each of us has to make our own choices. And we have to live with them.” She wipes away her tears.

“I’m still praying she’ll come back soon, but I think this week would have been good for her.” Daisy stops speaking as Jasmine walks in. Camellia notices she has a spring to her step. Iris and Lily come in whispering. They are close friends and their boyfriends are good friends too. Violet walks in and sits next to Camellia.

Daisy bends down next to the table. Camellia watches her wipe her face with a tissue. She is in shock. Rose isn’t the kind of person who would make those demands. But Daisy stood up for her. Camellia smiles at her when she sits back up and Daisy smiles back.

“Ladies, good evening. Let’s begin.” Daisy gets out her planted notebook and begins reading the lesson.
